Get Caught Reading Week takes place every year in June and is celebrated in the LRC in a variety of different ways which include hosting visits from authors and illustrators, reading with primary school children, book fairs, competitions and raffles.
The ‘Burgess Hill’s Best Book Awards’ project has been introduced to replace the popular West Sussex Book Award scheme. It involves students from Year 7 working in partnership with Year 6 children from the local primary schools. The students read and vote on a shortlist of six books and get together at the Academy three times throughout the course of the project.
‘Oakreads’ book club meets every Wednesday lunchtime in the LRC to discuss and recommend titles and to take part in various shadowing schemes. The club is open to students in all year groups.
1:1 reading takes place every morning at tutor time in the LRC. This involves students in Year 8 reading with a partner three mornings a week and is a lovely start to the day.
