Another successful sports day for The Burgess Hill Academy. There were a huge number of participants some great performances and a great time had by all. It kicked off the previous Monday when the year 7s had their field events. This led to over 20 students being picked for the TBHA team at the Year 7 Mid Sussex Schools Championships held at Broadbridge Heath. At that event there were some standout performance by Lily Dendy, Ashton Pettifer, Thomas Penswick and Ethan Hall all of whom finished top 3 in their respective events.
On the actual Sports Day 3rd July we were blessed with some great weather. This may have attributed to the feel good atmosphere and moreover 5 school records being broken. In the morning field events Lucy Kirby notched a school record in the Year 8 Girls Long Jump. In the same year group Grace Roy broke the record in the girls shot putt. Callum Waters also in year 8 defied the odds to clear over 1.50m and secure the school record. Not to be outdone in the year 9 event Max Fincham smashed the boys shot putt record.
In the afternoon the track programme and participation events take place. The participation events which include; crossbar challenge, Frisbee golf, cup stacking and howler throwing, attracted a lot of entries which helped the tutor groups in their grand totals. However, it was the traditional track events that still draw in the crowds and the racing was fast and furious but always fair. There were some great races none more so than the year 9 boys 1500m which came down to a photo finish and won by Lucas Gorringe Santos. The relay events always ends the day and the best was held to last with the year 10 boys battling it out to be top tutor group - Josh Thompson fighting off a fast finishing Charlie Broad to claim to all the points for his tutor group.
The athlete of the day went to Lucy Kirby, on top of her school record for long jump, she went on to smash the year 8 girls 300m school record in a scintillating run.
Congratulations to all the competitors and a big thank you to the PE Staff and all staff for making it a great day.
