Year 9 Speed Networking

We were taken into the Barnden Hall where we met our first employer. Each student got a sheet with a number of questions to ask the employee. The questions ranged from “Do you work long hours?” to “Do you have to wear uniform?”, we had five minutes to ask these different questions and when our time was up we had to guess what job the employee had.

After guessing, the worker described to us what their job was and what they did. We interviewed a range of different people, for example engineers, film producers, PA’s, Directors of American Express, and someone who works in HR.

Many of the employees talked about apprenticeships and how they set you up for life. An engineer from HPC was telling us how soon he will be ending his apprenticeship and he talked about how the company put him through college, and now he will have a job for life instead of worrying what he wants to do when he gets out of college.

After asking a few questions about each person’s job, they in return asked us what we enjoy in our spare time and what we may consider working as in the future. Some helped us decide what options we may like to take for our GCSEs based on our likes and dislikes. Every employee was very encouraging and guided us into the right direction. We both enjoyed hearing about their experiences in the work place and how they get along with co-workers and managers.

Overall we both enjoyed the experience as it was something new that we haven’t tried and we took away the knowledge that they gave us to help with our GCSEs and eventually our career choice.

Our grateful thanks to the attendees of the event and their employers.
